The hotel

You will instantly feel relaxed when you stay at the Bay Hotel. The hotel is chilled out and contemporary but manages to combine luxury with a relaxed, informal atmosphere, a perfect beachfront retreat. Occupying the coolest location in Cape Town, in the very heart of the trendy suburb of Camps Bay, you can sip on a sundowner whilst overlooking the white sandy beach. In addition to the spectacular view, the hotel is in the middle of the Camps Bay ‘strip’ dotted with bars and restaurants where Cape Town’s ‘in-crowd’ just must be seen. All of this and only a few minutes from the Table Mountain cableway and just 15 minutes from the V&A Waterfront and downtown. Back on site, there are four beautiful pools to lounge by and Bistro at The Bay, serves up a feast of gourmet delights. Afterwards, relax in the sophisticated elegance of Caamil’s Bar and Caamil, the best barman you will find in Cape Town.

The hotel is very run down. You can tell it was probably quite lovely around 10 years ago, but it needs updating. Our bed was extremely hard. They did put a cover on it to help make it comfier. The seats outside on the balcony and the sofa in the room were both extremely uncomfortable. The mini bar is also very poor with just water and perhaps 1 or 2 soft drinks. The cupboards etc were old and didn't open properly. We also had to ring for new towels, as they took them but didn't replace them. Additionally, the room service took for ever, and even by 2pm the following day they had left our leftover food still in the room - causing it to smell. The food in the hotel was nice enough, and there are a fair number of sunbeds, which are comfortable, and the pool area was nice. It is a good location for getting around Camps Bay/seeing other parts of Cape Town. Read less

The Bay Hotel was recommended to us by a friend. The view - sea and mountain was spectacular. Great location with plenty of restaurants in the area for dinner or lunch. The room was lovely and comfortable except for what we think was a blocked drainage smell, even the lift had this awful smell. We reported this and was told they would look into it and maybe move us. Nothing was sadly done. Staff were very friendly, but breakfast was slow, waiting a long time to just get a coffee or order food. Read less

I have been coming to The Bay for over 20 years. I am also a Village n Life Leisure Club Member. I was placed in a sea facing room for R12 000 per night. The room was at the edge of the hotel which backs onto restaurants and clubs. My wife and I did not get to sleep for a single minute of the evening because of the loud base coming through the walls. The DSTV was not working in the room, the phone was also not working, so we couldn't see how to phone reception or room service. There was no menu in the room so we didn't know what we could order. I walked to the reception to ask for a technician to fix the DSTV, all for a menu and order room service. When the two cheeseburgers arrived the patties were completely raw. When I approached management in the morning, I insisted on being moved to another room, which was done. The fact that management never even asks if they could give us a complimentary night is unacceptable. This is not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel. I can only imagine what international guests are saying about the hotel. Read less
