In the Raa Atoll, this 20-hectare island is surrounded by 1.5km of soft sand. Transfer time from Malé International Airport: 40 minutes by seaplane (remember to pack light for the seaplane transfer as luggage allowance is 20kg plus 5kg hand luggage, per person).

In truth I was not convinced that a holiday in the Maldives would totally suit me. My wife on the other hand was very keen to go and thought the experience would be great for me. I realise that all sounds quite entitled but the reality is I am not into diving or snorkelling and can be quite restless. I chose the Emerald because it had a decent amount of other facilities and activities and the recent reviews had been extremely good. I am extremely pleased to say that my wife was right, a trip to the Maldives was exactly what I needed and the Emerald Faarafushi exceeded my expectations on nearly every count. It would be hard to fault the hotel on any front - maybe they could let people paddle board or kayak round the island - the facilities were excellent, from the gym, tennis and Padel court to the water stuff. The reef snorkelling was amazing. I was blown away how enjoyable it was, so many fish, manta and baby sharks! importantly the food and restaurants were very impressive. If you have 8 nights it’s important to have variety and for each to be high quality. Thanks to the Italian head chef this was achieved. Our particular favourites were the Canivore and Mediterraneo. Our beach villa was perfect, we were offered an upgrade to a waterfront villa out on the reef, but were so happy with our beach villa we did not move. What made the whole experience perfect was the staff. They could not be faulted. Everyone was kind, sincere, enthusiastic and genuinely seemed to be enjoying their work and as a consequence all did it well. And top of the list of those doing a great job was Aslaan, our host. He was fantastic and a joy to meet; nothing was too much for him. We truly wish him well in his career and life generally and hope to see him again one day.

Emerald Faarufushi stands out among the four Maldivian resorts we've visited, primarily for its outstanding all-inclusive F&B package. Unique to this resort, à la carte dining is unlimited (subject to availability), and even the buffet at Aqua impressed us enough to cancel a few reservations for themed nights.
With just 80 villas spread over a 7-hectare island, it never feels crowded. Many guests enjoy the privacy of their pool villas, leaving ample space at the main pool and beachfront. The island’s size is perfect for exploring on foot or bike—whether it’s a 20-minute leisurely walk or a quick 13-minute cycle depending on how many photos you take!
Rooms:
We stayed in a Beach Villa with a private pool, and it exceeded expectations. The villa featured a well-stocked wine cooler, spacious bathroom with an indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a sun deck leading to the beach. Our location on the southern beach was ideal—offering tranquillity, easy access to Aqua, and breath-taking sunset views.
Dining:
The dining experience was exceptional across all venues:
- Aqua: Fantastic breakfast with a diverse buffet and patisseries rivalling those in France.
- Beach Club/Carnivorous: Laid-back lunches and starlit dinners with fresh seafood and hearty mains.
- Le Asiatique & Teppanyaki: Authentic Asian flavours, though the Teppanyaki lunch lacked the lively atmosphere of an evening experience, partly due to lack of audience participation
- Mediterraneo: Creative dishes with fine-dining presentation; the Sailfish Tartare was a highlight.
Activities & Service:
The house reef snorkelling was unforgettable—vivid marine life including sharks, rays, and vibrant fish. Bikes and walking paths made exploring the island effortless, and the staff’s attention to detail was remarkable. Special thanks to our villa host and the many team members who went above and beyond to make our stay extraordinary.

Faheem, our villa host; Shamrax & Nasheem at Aqua; Tom, Rakshit & Subass at The Beach Club/Carniverous; Prabuddha at Teppanyaki; Sameera, Ankur, Rajat and Deniken at the Pool Bar.
Priyanka at Aqua/Mediterreaneo was so lovely to my wife; Smita at Asiatique was super sweet too. Bona & Ram went above and beyond to provide insights and guidance on wine pairings, and along with Joseph managed to source a few bottles not on the menu. Vishnu provided great service too and helped organise bookings for us. Head Chef Moreno is omnipresent and insists on authentic dishes.
Suggestions for Improvement:
Evening entertainment felt underwhelming, despite a fabulous location and extensive drinks menu; the Dolphin Sunset Cruise wasn’t ideal given the weather conditions at the time. As is common at all Maldivian resorts, the battle with beach erosion was evident, though management is proactive in addressing it and sand will shift back when the monsoon transitions again.
Summary:
Emerald Faarufushi is a serene, luxurious escape with excellent dining, vibrant marine life, and warm hospitality. Despite minor drawbacks, it’s our favourite Maldivian resort to date—perfect for relaxation, snorkelling, privacy, and unforgettable sunsets.
