We saw loads of marine life on the house reef using the complementary snorkel and goggles- the water sports team are fantastic and are so happy to go above and beyond- nothing was too much trouble.
The villa is immaculately clean with both morning and evening housekeeping. A special mention to Habib who was our villa attendent who managed to get the villa back into a spotless state even after a toddler had been running riot he was so lovely and also put some magical touches in the room like our happy honeymoon message.
Really hope to return such a magical holiday.

Our third visit to The Maldives but this time to a different island – Vilu Reef. Previously we had stayed at Constance Moofushi and considered it to be close to perfection. Unfortunately it had edged its way a little above our price point for a ten night stay and Vilu Reef seemed to be of a similar size and was ‘in budget’. We hoped Vilu Reef would have a similar laidback ambiance – not too many motorised water sports or water slides etc – and that certainly proved to be the case. I guess there must be around 300 guests on the island at any one time but sometimes you almost felt like Robinson Crusoe – just you and golden sand with crystal clear water and swaying palm trees. The snorkelling is excellent – especially between entrance points 1 and 3 where the coral drops off a huge cliff just meters off the beach.
We stayed in a Sunset Water Villa which was very spacious and despite its name managed to capture the sun from around 9.30 in the morning all the way through to the 6.00 p.m. sunset. It had a large balcony so plenty of shade if required and the ladder down in to the sea was perfect for a quick dip or a snorkel.
For the first few days we ate lunch and dinner in the Aqua buffet restaurant which was very good with plenty of freshly prepared choices. It is however nice to have an a la carte service when available and so for the remainder of our stay we alternated lunch and dinner between The Spice and The Well Done restaurants. The staff and quality of food in both was excellent. There are limited outside lunchtime tables available for couples at The Spice which is a shame. There are plenty available at The Well Done however both restaurants have ample beachside tables for dinner. Booking in advance is essential at both.
There are two bars The Nautilus and The Pool Bar…. also called Positive Energy. The original Nautilus was in the final stages of a long renovation so a temporary Nautilus has been set up at the far end of the island and had a large bar area - a stage - a pool table and plenty of seating. Neither bar had much of an atmosphere but as with the three restaurants the staff easily made up for that with their excellent service and enthusiasm The Pool Bar is actually a bit of a mishmash and sometimes is used as an overflow for The Spice restaurant if it is very windy or wet. I am sure better use could be made of this area and no doubt a refurbishment is on the cards for the future.
Overall Vilu Reef well exceeded our expectations. We loved the food – we loved the overall laidback ambiance – we loved the snorkelling but most of all we loved the staff who make the island tick. A special mention to our virtual WhatsApp Host Ana who organised some of our restaurant reservations and the dolphin cruise – a must – and also managed to arrange for a diver to look for a lost earring. Also thanks to Shayan – a future Sri Lankan opening batsman apparently!! – in the Aqua restaurant for looking after us so well. To our new friend from the Philippines Chris who had only been on the island for three weeks but always met us with a huge smile and superb service at lunch or dinner in The Well Done. To Ranjith from India who managed to remember our room number before we did and was able to come close to serving our drinks in The Nautilus before we had placed our order. Finally thank you to Arun who meticulously cleaned and serviced our water villa twice daily. Would we visit Vilu Reef again……….Of course we would…and so should you.

The breakfast was very good, especially the omelette cook was very nice and directly remembered our favorite mix. Asmita brought us to our table every morning and Shakil served us very well. In general when it comes to the restaurants the chef of all the restaurants of the island was very polite and asked multiple times if we are missing something or gave us insights in the kitchen/cooking details. In the „well done“ restaurant the waiter Praveen did a perfect job with explaining all the flavors and specialities and also the cook Kaber was very interested in our opinion about the meals. The same was true for the „Spice“ restaurant and the waiters Digajan and Ali and the cook Kushal. In the beach bar Ranjith was extremely attentive and served us delicious cocktails. Our room was extremely clean and tidy every time, also special wishes for the minibar were handled by Matiur in an uncomplicated and exemplary way.
Overall we had a great time on the island and enjoyed it a lot.
