We love The Shelburne Sonesta and consider it our home away from home. We love the neighborhood. The rooms are nice, well appointed and clean, but the biggest reason we stay is because of the people. Everyone from the doormen, bellmen, housekeeping and front desk people are always so pleasant, and welcome us back each time. But we must put in a special word for the Front Desk Manager, Stephanie Apunte. She is very special. She’s always very professional, but also very friendly and most accommodating and helpful all the time. We really enjoy staying here and will continue to do so! Read less

We booked two double/twin rooms for 5 nights. The hotel is in a great location, approx 10 mins walk from Grand Central. The hotel restaurant and bars are very good, great service and great quality food and drinks. The rooftop bar is phenomenal. Our favourite employee Joel was amazing. So friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are clean, a decent size and pleasant to be in and we always saw that housekeeping did a great job. A couple of minor things. The decor is a little tired - in one room the sink was cracked and the bathroom door was badly water damaged. In one room the alarm clock didn’t work, in another the USB charger port didn't work near one of the beds. We didn’t raise these minor issues with the hotel team because, we kind of assumed that they are a busy hotel in NYC and we didn’t expect perfect for mid range - we are out of the room all day so it is what it is and we’ll put up with these small issues. Resort fee communication however is a little questionable. We were told it is $15 a day per room from the cupboard by Virgin holidays. The hotel website states $10 per room per day - it’s not actually correct. You are given only two small items (eg 2x small size - not full size! - cans of coke or 2x28g packs of chips) and you have to give your room number so they can prevent you taking more than two items. Probably less than $5 value max. That needs clearing up on the website or correcting for the customer as it’s unfair to misrepresent what you are getting for the resort fee. I also didn’t get a itemised account at check out, I asked for one and assumed it would be emailed but it hasn’t been. I have two charges on my credit card which are unclear (related to the resort fee but unsure of how they are reaching the total calculation). I have tried to contact customer service for the hotel to ask for clarity but have had no response so have raised with virgin holidays to try and get some understanding. Again, not the best but hopefully fixable. Ultimately a good hotel - safe, pleasant and friendly just some minor issues which need to be ironed out. Read less

Another great stay at the Shelbourne. This time, as our room wasn’t ready, we were upgraded to a suite, which was huge and had a great view of the Empire State Building. We ate breakfast in the restaurant a couple of times and Celeste and her team were really friendly and welcoming. I was glad to see that Dennis is still working as doorman there. Such a lovely man and his sidekick( whose name I don’t know) both very helpful, funny and friendly and set our day off to a great start. Unfortunately, this time there was a charge on my card which was taken, but which I wasn’t told about. I was told about the resort fee for which I paid $ 179 for but then there was another charge for $200 which I didn’t notice until I got home. I did message before I went to ask about charges, but got no reply. From searching a Facebook group I belong to I now think that this might have been the charge in case there are any breakages. I don’t mind paying these charges, but the hotel should be more transparent about them. I have tried to find an email address for the hotel but without success, and I don’t want to incur costly phone charges.I did search the website but only saw information about the resort fee. Had I known, I would have rather used my credit card as I would have got the money back sooner. I am now still waiting over a week later. It won’t stop us using the hotel again, but people really do need to be told. Not everyone has limitless amounts of money, and some people really do need to budget even when on holiday. Otherwise a great stay. Read less

Whilst the rooms are big and location fine, I must comment on the very disappointing treatment on arrival. Having travelled from UK and train into Manhattan when we arrived late evening the sofa bed was not prepared for our arrival although they knew that there were 4 of us. The solution was a porter delivering some sheets and blankets and saying were we happy pulling the bed out and making it. There was no housekeeping available. Quite frankly this was unacceptable from a hotel that promotes itself in this market. Eventually the porter pulled bed out and roughly made the bed where we discovered the blanket had holes in it. Next day we complained and beds made properly but now no towels. Very poor service and left a poor image of hotel Read less

Booked through Virgin holidays on the back of the reviews and location. On arrival very happy to find that resort fees were included in our booking We had the standard guest rooms. Don't feel the need for upgrade to studio with kitchenette Very friendly doorman and great staff on reception. Check in was swift and we were allocated two rooms next door to each other Ours (703) was very spacious, much bigger than expected. Clean bathroom with lovely toiletries and towels changed daily. Closet with hangers and space for luggage. Room (704) was much smaller. Nowhere near as much space but adequate for a single person Lifts could be an issue at busy times, 16 floors and two main lifts. The third lift along the corridor was accessible but used by staff for luggage, cleaning etc We didn't use any facilities but were offered use of the 24 hr gym The bar next door has a small menu but prices were about average for New York. Staff were attentive and friendly Location - about 6/8 minutes to Grand Central Station, 5 minutes to 5th Avenue, about 15 mins to Empire State Building from here you can walk towards Central Park. Lots of bodegas, restaurants and take aways in the area. Saw lots of food deliveries coming in to the hotel during our stay - door dash etc There is a rooftop bar open Tuesday to Saturday with views of the city/empire state. Read less
