Goulding's Lodge

Monument Valley, Utah

Star rating

The hotel

A ‘get-away-from-it-all’ retreat, Goulding’s Lodge is seriously secluded. But that doesn’t mean you’ll be short of things to do. Its central spot in America’s ‘Grand Circle’ of national parks and monuments makes it an ideal motel-style base, with freebies like parking and WiFi. Opened as a lodge in the 1920s, movie crews soon flocked here to make Westerns in the surrounding Monument Valley, inspired by owner Harry Goulding: in fact, the likes of John Ford and John Wayne slept and ate here. Today, its museum’s filled with movie mementos, alongside reminders of its trading post and Navajo heritage. For a true taste of Navajo culture, there’s the gift shop’s rug room, and the Stagecoach Dining Room, where local Navajos rustle up home-style dishes – served with Monument Valley views.

We stayed in a cabin at Goulding’s. It was wonderful! We really enjoyed sitting on the front porch for sunrise and sunset. The beds were comfortable. Had small dining table indoors and on front porch. Refrigerator also had a freezer with an icemaker

This place looks it age. It's a well established resort and they have a slick operation. Check in was easy, things were explained and our room was in a lodge on the ground floor. This place looks it age. It's a well established resort and they have a slick operation. Check in was easy, things were explained and our room was in a lodge on the ground floor. The room was large, and had a balcony/veranda that was private and well thought out. The place had an 'authentic' pioneer feel and the decor fitted in with that. The view was amazing, overlooking the valley. The room was dated but had everything we needed. It had a large TV, fridge and microwave. Also had a coffee machine and we were supplied extra coffee pods on request. The diner was on the expensive side, so we stuck to food we had bought that day. The pool was being refurbished and so we weren't able to use that. On site there was a shop and gas station which, again was a little expensive, but as the only facilities, no choice. We went off season and without doubt the place would be super busy later in the year. We walked around a trail from our door which was great, and we would highly recommend this resort. We would definitely stay again. Read less

Read more

The cabin had a full equipped kitchen (a supermarket was also nearby, walking distance) and an own private porch with a full view of the monuments in the valley. The rooms (2) and bathroom were clean and well equipped. We also visited the restaurant but keep in mind the short opening hours (until 9 p.m.) and no alcohol allowed ;) All in all I can recommended the place if you want to feel authentic climate of this place. This was our second stay at Gouldings and it was markedly better than the first. We first came here just after covid shutdowns ended and the place felt dreary, old and a rundown, especially the restaurant. We felt Goulding's Lodge and restaurant were taking advantage of their location, the great views and lack of competition to sit on their laurels. This time around the rooms had been redecorated and the restaurant was way better (still not great but way better). We took their monument valley tour (late afternoon) and although the driver/guide was less than enthusiastic, we really enjoyed it. As sunset approached during the last hour of the tour, the scenery was even more unbelievably beautiful. We would return. Read less
