Go Gaga over Accra

Ghana's capital city Accra welcomes over a million tourists every year, while taking full advantage of visiting friends or family or experiencing it for the very first time. It boasts a thriving community centred on the country’s rich story and culture. All of which is proudly displayed throughout Accra’s museums and historical sites, and one of the best places to soak it in is at the National Museum of Ghana. It’s a must-see for anyone wanting to clue up on the country’s heritage. The museum is brimming with local history, including exhibits on African culture, daily life and key milestones. Take a guided tour to get the most out of your visit.

For another snapshot of Ghana’s history, you’ll find the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra. It’s dedicated to Ghana’s first president and is a significant historical site featuring a mausoleum. Its museum houses exhibits from Francis Kwame Nkrumah’s life and chronicles the steps to Ghana’s independence.

Exploring Ghana through Accra’s museums is one way to get a cultural fix on your trip. Another is by visiting Makola Market. This colourful open-air bazaar gives a true flavour of Ghanian life and is a hit with locals and tourists alike. You’ll find stalls selling everything from traditional crafts to fresh produce, so it’s a real treasure trove for a unique souvenir.

If you’re looking for something to counteract the hustle and bustle of Makola Market, Aburi Botanical Gardens is the place to be. This lush tropical estate is a 35 minute drive out of Accra and gives you the chance to explore a variety of native and imported plants. Plus, you’ll also find plenty of birds and butterfly species down its tree-lined walkways. Hire an official guide to give you a tour so you don’t miss a thing.

And, of course, no trip to Accra is complete without visiting Labadi Beach. Kick off your flip flops and dip your toes into the Gulf of Guinea on one of Accra’s most popular beaches. It’s the perfect place for a spot of relaxation, swimming and a sunset, or two. You’ll also find local music and dance performances as well.
