Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Virgin rating

The hotel

Lying on a beautiful, long stretch of private beach, the Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa sits within 400 lush acres and is home to an 18th-century sugar plantation. A popular feature here is the iconic swimming pool but guests (kids' especially) also love the Sugar Mill Falls Waterpark, which is the largest in Jamaica. Why not grab a tube and float down the ‘lazy river’ or try one of the slides. There’s also a daily kids' club, leaving you with time to recharge in the full-service spa, or why not try out the Championship golf course. A variety of restaurant options with fine dining and sophisticated wine lists are on-site, with the newly renovated Rum Factory a particular hit, as is the Three Palms, overlooking the beautifully landscaped golf course.

A perfectly serviceable but generally unexciting resort hotel, catering primarily to families from North America. More a  3 star plus than a 4 star. As other reviewers have commented, it really needs a major refurbishment (not much appears to have been done since it was built 40 years ago), especially bathrooms, and though some of the common area roof leaks when it rains, there's a team working (very slowly) on fixing that, meanwhile none of the leaks have any effect on guests. The food is average. It's easy to book the service restaurants using the app as long as one remembers to do it soon after 8am the day before, but one goes for a better ambience and having table service – the food itself is no better, and arguably not as good as the main buffet restaurant. The main bar is a disgrace, on an outside terrace with uncomfortable and shoddy metal furniture, probably deliberate to dissuade one staying and asking for a second drink. Staff are almost all charming and helpful (shout out to Dennis at the front desk who resolved our only issue quickly and effectively), the only exception being the Rum Factory duty manager who was far from welcoming and appeared to preside over a chaos of uncleared tables. One can walk across the golf course in 15 minutes to the Rose Hall shops – but just for  the outing, as it's all touristy stuff. Nice bar though. Another 10 minutes uphill walk gets you to Rose Hall itself, one of the scarce tourist attractions in the area and worth an hour or so of your time. Getting to Mo'bay itself, if you don't want to pay inflated hotel taxi prices, is easy – just walk out on the main road and hail a passing Route  (shared) taxi. People will tell you it's risky, but we thought it was not only cheap but fine and fun, if crushed. Maybe not at night, though. Read less

Our stay was mediocre at best. Rooms had very old, outdated air conditioning system that was very loud, the noise from the "club" downstairs was extremely loud until 1am every night, and we were on the 4th floor. Wasn't as big of an issue for us as we were up late most nights anyways, but those with children would find this annoying. Walls between the rooms were paper thin, was woken up one morning by our neighbours TV. One elevator was out of service the entire duration of our stay, one day both were out of service, so the only option was the stairs. The resort had leaks coming from the ceiling all throughout. Food was very disappointing. The restaurants served very bland food, buffet had very few good options. The Italian restaurants pizza was basically a frozen microwave pizza. Very few options for "local" food, we were fortunate to go off the resort to try some actual authentic Jamaican food. There was the occasional meal that was decent, but overall it was sub par. The tipping culture is insane. Every little action taken seems like a tip is expected. Feels like it takes away from the idea of an "all-inclusive". Always trying to sell you something, and for an insane price. Played the golf course one day, couldn't even play 2 holes without being harassed to buy golf balls that they found in the woods. When you arrived at the resort, they try to pressure you into buying a "membership" to book with Playa resorts in the future. They tried to sell us on a $10,000 membership. We sat through the presentation because we just wanted the free gift basket, but what they told us would be a one hour sales pitch turned into over 2 hours. Just a heads up. The only positive would be that they had heavy pours on the drinks, otherwise I can't think of anything else. We enjoyed the weather and the beach, which is really what we came for, but the overall experience at this resort was disappointing. Read less

As many have said, the structure of the building is suffering. We have been coming back for over six years but will change. The location is great, on the beach and a shirt ride from the airport. The water park is great but it just needs updating elsewhere. The palms restaurant is now a $40 charge and with one of the remaining restaurants closed each night dining is limited. Rum room, Asian or Italian and the buffet. One elevator has been out all week, roof leaks in the coffee shop and a lack of investment. The staff try really hard though. Read less

We visited the first week of December 2024 and had a lovely time. We were very worried based on various reviews and commentary we read on TA, but were super pleased with all aspects of the hotel. The food at the sit down restaurants was very good and the buffet always had a lot of options, so everyone found something they enjoyed. The entertainment was fantastic as well. Especially Britney and Jordon at the water park activities. They were so funny and kept the games exciting for all ages. The rooms were decent sized and always kept super clean. The water park was great- only two slides but our 9 year old and 12 year old were very entertained. Small complaint on the level of alcohol provided. We don't expect top tier at an all inclusive, but given that it is Hilton brand, we anticipated slightly higher level options. They did have better selections at the sit down dinners, so watch for that and enjoy an elevated cocktail during dinner! The other thing the resort could do, which would be a cheap and easy update, is to buy new equipment for some of the games. the pool sticks and ping pong paddles were either broken or very old. investing in just a few new things would go a LONG way. overall great place for a quick warm weather get away!
