Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Honolulu, Oahu

Virgin rating

The hotel

Take in the rich heritage and stately décor of ‘The First Lady of Waikiki’. Something of a legendary resort, it cleverly combines turn-of the-century Victorian elegance with modern luxuries. Relax by the pool area, under the shade of the historic banyan tree, or on the resorts private section of beach. Fancy a bit of pampering? Treat yourself to an amazing experience at the Moanalani Spa, the only oceanfront Spa in Waikiki, where the menu features relaxing treatments inspired by traditional Hawaiian healing techniques. Dining is a treat here — from the oceanfront setting of Beachhouse at the Moana to the delightful island tradition of afternoon tea at the Veranda at the Beachhouse. For a pre-dinner glass of wine or artisan beer, head to Vintage 1901 overlooking the banyan tree, or enjoy a tropical drink with live entertainment at The Beach Bar.

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Beautiful birthday dinner

We went there for my birthday dinner. Magnificent view, amazing services, beautiful delicious food and beverages all made our evening fantastic. We usually go to Hawaii in the summer to surf (I am part Polynesian & part Asian) but hubby booked that for spring break this year so we also celebrated my birthday there. It was a great night.

Fantastic every time. Each visit to Oahu gets better and better. Kaneohe Bay is a must, as are the mountain treks. Taxis, though, have a maximum capacity of four passengers and can be pricey. We had 11 in our group, and so instead of getting 3 normal taxis, we got a limo each. It was more expensive but worth every cent just to see 11 limousines… Read more

The "and then" joke wasn't welcome after limousine 3. Read less

November 2024 was a return visit for us to celebrate my wife’s 40th birthday. We of course knew the resort location and amenities are ideal, but what made the trip truly fantastic was the level of care we experienced during our visit. I want to extend my tremendous gratitude to Micah Burr for making our trip absolutely amazing. We can’t wait to… Read more

The Moana is steeped in history, and genteel elegance. What i appreciated the most is that i could chose from the menu more tea sandwiches over sweets. As much as i love high tea, i don't always love all the sugar. Many places don't allow for as many substitutions as i made. But the Moana staff were entirely accommodating. Highly recommended for a luxurious respite. Read less

The renovation noise was intrusive but the late night street noise and music were way worse. There’s zero sound proofing. As a solo traveller I also never felt valued or welcome - no one greets you when you enter or leave, there’s no communication during your stay, and the staff just look like they’re going through the motions. And the resort fee is a total rip off - there’s no value in it for most people and it just inflates an already over priced hotel bill. The location is great but really they can’t keep trading on that - the hotel is tired and the rooms need work. There’s no room service and the bar food is ridiculously overpriced for what it is. The tv wasn’t reliable (internet?) and also some power points don’t work. I was looking forward to staying there but I’d never do so again - it’s surely not the hotel it could be and clearly once was. Read less
