Oleo Cancun Playa

Cancun, Mexico

Virgin rating

The hotel

Using minimalism to maximum effect, the sculptural ice-white architecture and matching monochrome interiors of Óleo Cancún Playa give it a calm chicness that’s a far cry from the buzz and colour of your setting — right at the start of the famously vibrant Cancún Hotel Zone. The dedication to ‘white’ is only really interrupted by flashes of blue — homage to the sea and surf just steps from the hotel. Overlooking the beach, the infinity pool adds a touch more turquoise, with the pool bar’s tropical-inspired cocktails adding their own shots of colour. The styling may be minimalist, but the features aren’t. You’ve got spa treatments, complimentary WiFi, an art workshop, and restaurant menus that take you from Japan to Mexico and Peru, with stops on the way for comfort food, international favourites, and bakery treats served up with Starbucks™ coffee.

Welcomed with a glass of sparking wine the concierge staff are fantastic...in particular Kevin. Genuine and professional. The entertainment guys Antonio and Rambo are a dream. So funny and energetic. The restaurant and bar staff work so hard and are brilliant at what they do. The buffet is lovely and the Asian restaurant is stunning. The Mediterranean restaurant was slightly disappointing. Oddly, you have to self seve yourself a salad. My main meal was luke warm but again, cannot fault the staff. Unfortunately our first room was next to the service life and was incredibly noisy and although spotlessly clean smelt of poor drainage. There must have been an issue as even when we moved rooms we had a period of no water then followed by no hot water. The lifts were temperamental and we had to use the outside emergency staircase on many occasions. My main issue was when we requested to move we were told it was an upgrade and we're asked to pay. The room had two double beds instead of our king-size and a very small balcony instead of the huge one we had previously with a 180 degree view. Needless to say we did not pay. The staff did give us some complimentary sparking wine and deserts for the inconvenience which we were very grateful for. I cannot impress enough how amazing the staff are. It's just unfortunate that they are left to deal with the hotel's short comings, which is not their fault. In my opinion the hotel needs to be advertised as a 3 star but once again I commend and thank all the staff for their hard work and commitment Read less

The food was amazing, the staff were kind and rooms were clean. I would definitely recommend. We took a day trip To tulum and isla mujures . Beautiful venue for weddings too. This was one of my favourite vacations yet. We had so much fun with the pool entertainment team . To sum it up it is an experience was worth every penny.

BEWARE: Don’t waste your money here. This is not a 4-star resort by any means—at best, it’s a 3-star. I’ve been coming to Cancun for years and even own a membership at the Hard Rock Hotel, but my friend wanted to try something different. Unfortunately, this place was a disappointment. Rooms: Outdated and in desperate need of refurbishment. Food: Very limited options and far from 5-star quality. The only standout was the Asian fusion restaurant, Hakka. Entertainment: Mostly limited to the pool area. Staff: Service quality varies depending on who you talk to. Spa: One of the few redeeming features. To top it off, there was no hot water for 5 hours today. That was the final straw—I’m getting a day pass at the Hard Rock tomorrow. Let me break it down further: Arrival Experience Upon arrival, we ordered water, but it never came. Later, we requested sparkling wine, and after asking twice, they brought red wine instead. When we mentioned this at the desk, they admitted the mistake and promised to send sparkling wine to our room. It never arrived. Dining & Amenities The "sparkling water" served at the beach isn’t even sparkling. Dinner is overly salty, and only the Asian fusion restaurant offers decent food. There are dogs everywhere: in the lobby, restaurants, and other common areas. Amenities across the property are outdated and need upgrading. Other Issues Underage children wearing flip-flops in the gym with no staff intervention. Lack of proper oversight regarding rules and general management. In summary, this resort is far below the standard it claims to uphold. If you’re considering it, save yourself the disappointment and look elsewhere. Read less

Me and my partner have been planning our wedding for over 4 years , we finally flew to oleo in December just us two , upon arrival we was greeted by Alberto who got us a glass of champagne as a welcome , the check in was quick and fast with everyone being lovely , we then spent the next two weeks eating in the 3 restaurants… the food was beautiful and they cater for everyone each restaurant is a different style from Mexican to sushi … the bar staff where amazing Enrique with his uno mas and great attitude really made our trip …. There is also brilliant bar men called Antonio and Gerry who can make a wicked cocktail…….the excursions where really good and it was a dream holiday with all the experiences we had . Our room was cleaned everyday and fresh towels for the pool daily , the hotel room was clean and comfortable with ac and a warmth setting to, the swimming pool with pool bar was very refreshing and has such a beautiful view of the ocean. Following on to our wedding day when the lady who was supposed to marry us did not turn up I panicked! Julia the manager jumped on it straight away , she sorted my bouquet and arranged someone to marry us within 10 mins ! She was so attentive and truly cared .. the man to the rescue was Rambo . He got changed and was on the beach to perform a beautiful heart felt ceremony, we truly were thankful and they made our day very special. Once we had gone back up to the room the effort was made to leave us chocolate covered strawberries, a personal note of congratulations and the bed with a heart and petals. Oleo made it a day to remember for us. We were so happy to have chosen oleo and are rebooking for next year ! Extremely sad to be going home as I can honestly say we feel like oleo is our home from home. Thank you to the entire hotel for there amazing attitudes and allowing us to experience there culture. We loved the hotel and everyone there … we shall see you in 2025 x Read less

Ok, so read the reviews, hard to work out which is right until you get here, unfortunately I'm in the negative side. This is in no way at all a 4 star? How they're getting away with this I have no idea? Booked a king-size 360 as sounded amazing. The room was on floor 9 but turned out to be up another flight of stairs so really on floor 10 with no lift access? . Room was ok but smelt of blocked drainage and human waste, also right next to the service lift that sounded like a lightsaber fight from star wars all night, got no sleep as was horrendous and had to change room after 1 night. Tried to charge us for this as classed as an upgrade? although moved to a double with a balcony the size of a beach towel. Didnt pay to change and happy it didn't smell or have loud noise all night. Discovered this hotel has red flag beaches all year round from one of the tour operators we booked with on the street. You may get sporadic amber flags if your lucky so can swim in the ocean in channelled areas. We had 2 Amber moments for 2 hrs on 2 days out of 10. No idea why this isn't advertised when booking as would never have booked this part of cancun if it was common knowledge. Hotel lifts didn't work some days so had to use stairwells. (Was on 7th floor) WiFi drops in and out. Had no running water in the room some days, when it worked we sometimes had hot water so couldn't wash or shower properly. Food is OK but no self service drinks in any of the restaurants so you're down to summoning waiters which can be hard. One thing we learned was always book your trips from the hotel not from street vendors. You will be on a coach of around 65 people from various hotels around cancun, our coach took 2 hours to collect everyone before we got anywhere near heading to our location Hotel booked trips have around 10 people max and are much faster at getting you to where you want to go. I've been to many parts of the world in many hotels so feel I can give a good headsup on this place. The people are nice, but the hotel needs to be downgraded. Extremely disappointing holiday and would never return. Read less
