Rabot Hotel from Hotel Chocolat

St Lucia, Caribbean

The hotel

On the site of the oldest cocoa plantation in St Lucia, the Rabot Hotel is definitely one for the chocoholics amongst you! Having said that, for the rare being that doesn’t delight in the dark stuff, this is pretty wonderful too. In a stunning location, with magnificent views of Gros Piton, luxurious mountainside lodges combine relaxed St Lucian charm with the ultimate in contemporary sophistication. Echoing the rich tones of freshly harvested cacao, dark woods exude cosy warmth with four-poster beds, a rainforest shower and freshly made chocolate treats (of course!) definite highlights. The spa too utilises the area’s natural treasure with a variety of creams, oils and scrubs, all made on the premises, specifically designed to harness the rejuvenating powers of the pod! You can even learn to make chocolate yourself at the Tree to Bean experience – truffle anyone? If you’re a foodie, you’re in for a serious treat at the Rabot Restaurant. Start the evening with a delicious mango, chilli and white chocolate margarita before perusing the delights on the menu, which is pioneering to say the least, exploring both the savoury and the sweet nature of chocolate. Fresh seafood is also to be found in abundance, accompanied by the finest of wines for an experience that is nothing less than sublime.

Firstly the hotel is stunning. We'd been slightly underwhelmed by the appearance of the rooms on photos, however the finish is really high-end and I was impressed. We didn't mind the sounds of the forest and slept comfortably through this. Similarly didn't miss air conditioning, one night we used a pedestal fan, the others we didn't even need it. The food is great, breakfast you get a different daily fresh fruit platter and smoothie, followed by anything you would like off quite a varied and novel breakfast a la carte (pancakes, banana bread, oatmeal, eggs, salt fish "local" breakfast etc). Similarly evening meals were good. Everything on the menu was included on the board plan, including the much more expensive (massive and excellent) steak. The cocktails are creative and high quality. Red wine was always served fridge cold which is rather basic and could do with improving (I suspect because by the glass they've had it open a day or two). We went to ledera, which is an easy 100m walk across the road for lunch one day which we would recommend, if anything the view is even better. The scenery is stunning from the pool and the restaurant/bar that sits over it, you get perfect sunsets over the petit Piton. Similarly great views from room balcony (worth getting the higher up luxe lodges). There are marked trails around the plantation which are good to wonder and the tree to bar chocolate experiences was good and a highlight. Nearby, the sulfer springs are 5 min drive away (possibly reachable through the back road through the property by foot). We did a tour of a few natural attractions inc the botanical gardens and waterfall, but probably if going again would just taxi to the sulfer springs as this was a highlight. The hotel also provide a mobile phone which you can call reception with when out and about, which is great for those with roaming charges, so they can book return taxis. Generally all very positive and would highly recommend as a couple who like high-end hotels! Some suggestions/cons: -The board system seemed really poorly understood by the staff, this came across as quite amateur by the staff, almost like they were agency. We had to prompt to be charged for food on a few occasions and this took a couple of tries to get this right- we are trying to pay you money! This seemed surprisingly amateur and if we hadn't been honest, presumably they would have lost ~$200! -The drinks are very expensive. To the point that the bar was empty the entire time except for us. Quite a few couples drank a bottle of wine (from outside) in their rooms at night. And the restaurant/bar was empty by 9.30pm on every night. This should be one of your bigger margin sales, again like the board understanding, this seemed like really amateur business sense. -Please don't serve red wine at 5C for 15 dollars a glass! Crystal was amazing with her ability to create drinks for us that were not on the menu, and I must say they were so good I feel they should be added to the menu. Read less

Gorgeous view, cute touches in room (velvetiser, mozzie spray, sweet treats, outdoor shower). Lovely, helpful staff and excellent experiences (sunset cruise around the Pitons was 👌, floating breakfast was different!). Top Tip - walk to Sulphur springs as a little Hike (get there early). Ask reception to sort a reservation for afternoon drinks at Ladera over the road. Do the chocolate tour. We loved it ❤️❤️❤️ we’ll be back when we can Read less
