We just returned from a week at Hodges Bay Resort. The grounds, pools, beach, etc are gorgeous and the view is spectacular- this place has such potential to be great, but it’s just not. The theme of my review would be inconsistency. One of the things you expect from a resort that markets itself as a luxury property (and prices accordingly) is consistency, of food, of service or experience. More than a month before arriving I emailed the info email asking about excursions as it’s a holiday week and things get booked. I received an email back detailing my options and saying my info would be forwarded to the concierge. I heard nothing back. I called the front desk and asked to speak with the concierge. After being put on hold several times I was directed to send a what’s app to a number that was supposed to be the concierge. Never got a response. I ended up booking most of our outings myself. Not a good start. We were upgraded to a 3 bedroom but it was not exactly an upgrade and was not ready. I believe another reviewer has mentioned this room- 3107. It is on the ground floor and, while ocean front- the hedges are so high that you can only see the water if you are standing up. Kind of defeats the purpose of oceanfront.. I saw each other the things the other reviewer mentioned as being wrong with the room. Honestly the grout being stained was not a big deal, nor was the crack in the holding tank for the toilet as it was not leaking. The room was clean. However- the couches and ottoman were stained and insanely uncomfortable. Someone had put what seems like boards inside three of the cushions and the one that did not sagged down so when you sat you were in a hole. For the price this is not acceptable. Bright spot- one of the guys brought us more loungers (though they were frayed and the cushions mildewed I appreciated the effort and he did bring covers for the chairs) and the water guys were very attentive each day. First day of housekeeping was great. 2nd day we’re out all day and came back to find the room had not been tidied. Called the front desk and was told we were on the “evening shift”- it was already 530 pm. In all our travels worldwide I have never encountered evening housekeeping unless it was turndown service. The next morning I called to say we’d be out all day (until 430 pm) and could our room be cleaned while we were gone. I was told no problem by the front desk. It did not happen. While the front desk staff is very pleasant, it’s my experience that they do not follow through. We did meet the concierge team however and they were great at follow up. Craig and Jonathan got us a dinner reservation and a helicopter tour with no issue and communicated well throughout the process. On to the food. Breakfast is fine with lots of options and it is a buffet so no waiting for food to be prepared. The service at breakfast was ok. Our server was friendly, but at one point I witnessed several manager looking folks in what seemed like an argument. They saw me watching and stopped- but it was strange. We ate dinner at white sands twice. The first time the restaurant was mostly empty, there were a few servers and then again several manager types that were literally just standing near the hostess stand and beverage area. It took a long time for our drinks and food to arrive and not once did anyone check on us during that time to refill our drinks or give us an update. Well over an hour (two of us did the live station and that was the way to go) for a very dry and thin piece of wahoo with some vegetables. Again. there was no one in the place and at least 3 managers standing around. I don’t blame the servers as it does not seem that they are trained at all in customer service. They were not unkind or unprofessional, just indifferent. This is in stark contrast to other restaurants we went to on the island. Yes, we waited for food- that is absolutely fine and usually means it’s freshly prepared, but we were checked on, drinks refreshed and generally made to feel like we were valued guests. The food itself at White Sands was edible but that’s as far as I’ll go. We also participated in the New Years dinner which was overpriced and again the food was not great. The service was a bit better, servers in happy moods and a manager did stop by our table to see how we were- we said fine, which we were. She did not note or empty drinks or call someone over. Again, it’s just inconsistent. I think this place is trying so hard to be something they are not, without getting the basics down first. Another bright spot- the food on Prickly Pear was absolutely delicious. It’s a tiny little kitchen so you will wait at least an hour, recommend ordering as soon as you get over there. Other reviewers are correct about there not being enough lounge chairs by the adult pool or the beach for the amount of guests- at least not during Christmas week. It’s a good thing my husband is an early riser- most of the chairs were claimed by 8 am. Again, you do not expect to have to fight for a lounger at a luxury resort.. All in all, we enjoyed our time outside of the resort much more than our time at the resort. Love Antigua and we will be back, but not at Hodges Bay. Read less

Third, and certainly not least, the people there really make the place feel warm and inviting. The owner roams the grounds as well and he is friendly and engages with everyone. Special shout-out to Kyle, Isaiah, Ferah, Jade, Keirin, and Tango. And Corletta for baking a delicious lemon birthday cake last minute, it was so good. Specifically, I’d like to shoutout Markade for being the best person ever- he was readily available, eager, resourceful and helped us schedule activities, reservations, order food from local restaurants. From the beginning to the end he was helpful and sincere and we’ve made a friend to come back to. Our 2nd stay was at Tamarind Hills and while that was a bit more luxurious, Hodges Bay is more hospitable and you’ll feel right at home. Thank you to all of the friendly staff that work there and I hope to come back!!! :) Read less

The hotel had charged a 50% deposit on booking and refused to refund it on the basis that their policy is for a 50% charge if cancelled within 30 days. I emailed them the booking confirmation from Hotels.com which clearly said refundable until 9 December but they still refused to refund it. Thankfully Hotels.com were able to intervene and the hotel then apologised for the "misunderstanding" and promised to refund the deposit (although to add insult to injury, they then mistakenly processed another charge instead of the refund. which they have now voided). I was very disappointed that the hotel would not honor its booking terms without intervention from the booking agent and I would not have any confidence that other payments and any disputes are handled fairly. The most beautiful hotel I’ve ever stayed in and not just cos it’s really cool, full of amazing art and set on a perfectly lovely Caribbean beach but everyone there makes you feel so welcome from the great team on reception who helped with any queries you had to the team at breakfast and supper, the bar team, the housekeeping crew and the guys who take you out in the speedboat to the hotels private Island, Prickly Pear, From the moment you walk in, after a long flight from England, and you are offered a glass of champagne, you know this is a special place. We had an Oceanfront One bedroom Suite which had a sitting room and sofa bed with a small bathroom/cloakroom, and a door to the patio overlooking the beach. This room opened onto the main bedroom(comfiest bed ever, beautiful linens) which also had a door to the outdoor patio so it meant that my son could sleep in without me disturbing him so I could sit out early and watch the world waking up. The main bathroom led off the bedroom - bath and shower(not a power shower, life is lived at a more gentle pace here but it does the job). This really is a haven of tranquility, I’d stayed on Dickinson Bay previously as everyone told me how great the beach was but one of the things I loved about Hodges was that it was so private, all you heard was the sound of the gentle waves and the birds in the palms. There are three pools, all different, all lovely and the pool bar is a great place to hang out and make new friends, the all day menu is really good and we liked everything we tried - yummy pizzas, chicken wings, burgers, fish tacos - I could go on… the only downside was the inconsistency of the cocktails , sometimes they were amazing and other times the mix wasn’t quite right, the same went for the cocktails on Prickly Pear too. The food in the restaurant was nice though we only ate there once as we wanted to explore the Island and we also had two days at the Cricket. Breakfasts were excellent, a lovely choice of fruits, hot foods which always had interesting side, pastries, great service and the view on a morning is just idyllic. This is a stunning holiday destination, great for all ages, families, solos, couples, I was there with my son who recently moved to London to work and it was great to be able to share the holiday(and the cricket) with him. I can highly recommend our tour guide Carrick of Daily Routine Enterprise who works out of St John’s and looked after us the whole week - really reasonable rates, highly knowledgeable and the nicest guy. It’s not a City hotel where everything is pristine and you have to dress for dinner - if you want that, go somewhere else but if want to to recharge your batteries, relax, chill out and enjoy the vibe then this is for you. Thank you to everyone there for making our stay so memorable - we’ll be back! Read less
