Child’s play: Fun things to do in Atlanta for grown ups
Who says carefree fun is only for the kiddos? For those looking to embrace their inner child, here are some fun things to do in Atlanta to make you feel young again.
Adult Nights at LEGOLAND Discovery Center
Although this creative and colourful Phipps Plaza attraction is normally geared towards ages 3 to 10, LEGOLAND Discovery Center hosts adult-only nights on a quarterly basis for the young at heart. Kicking off at 7pm, these special evenings welcome big kids to take part in the LEGO Factory Tour and building challenges led by LEGOLAND Discovery Center Model Builders. Adults can even hop on the Merlin’s Apprentice and Kingdom Quest laser rides, catch a movie in the 4D cinema or simply stare in awe at the MINILAND display of Atlanta’s skyline built from LEGO bricks.
Dragon*Con
This celebration of multi-media popular culture descends on downtown Atlanta each summer, enlivening the streets with costumed participants and science-fiction aficionados. Since its start in 1987, Dragon*Con has grown to become the largest convention of its kind, attracting more than 52,000 attendees and encompassing five hotels near Centennial Olympic Park. Dress up as your favourite comic character and take part in the thousands of hours of programming or get in some jaw-dropping people watching at the parade showcasing more than 3,000 outfitted participants.
North Georgia Canopy Tours
Let out a child-like squeal as you zip across the treetops of North Georgia during an adventure with North Georgia Canopy Tours. Choose from a variety of expeditions taking you across sky bridges, down nature walks and zipping through the air above ponds and the North Oconee River. After conquering the high-elevation obstacles, top off your excursion with some good old-fashioned competition as you race a partner on a 695-foot dual zip over the Hilltop Pond with others cheering you along.
Shoot the ‘Hooch
Jump feet first into a raft or tube and enjoy a lazy summertime float down the Chattahoochee River. As you drift from start to finish – which can take anywhere from one to four hours (or more, depending on where you put in and take out) – soak up the rays and dangle your toes in the refreshing water. When it’s time for a break, pull over to one of the Chattahoochee’s beaches to enjoy a waterside picnic. A number of companies rent tubes and provide transportation, but you can also bring your own equipment for a completely free ride. For more info, visit shootthehooch.com.
Sky Zone Trampoline Park
Big kids can literally bounce off the walls at Sky Zone Trampoline Park, where numerous connected trampolines create an entire surface of rebounding fun. With multiple locations in metropolitan Atlanta, this high-flying attraction is open to any age, shape or physical ability. Take part in the open jump or try your hand at 3-D Dodgeball, which puts a bouncing twist on the traditional game. If looking to work up a sweat, the SkyRobics fitness classes combines low-impact cardiovascular exercise and strength training, leaving you exhilarated and exhausted.
